Reviews surgical documentation and assigns accurate ICD-10, CPT, HCPCS, and modifier codes for complex procedures performed throughout WVU Medicine.
Responsible for coding complex surgical procedures, ensuring compliance with AMA and CMS coding guidelines, and supporting revenue cycle operations by resolving documentation and billing issues.
Works with providers and other departments to ensure accurate coding, timely abstraction, clean claim development, and ongoing provider education.
Requirements & Qualifications
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Current HIM/Coding certification through AHIMA or AAPC
- Must obtain Specialty Medical Coding Certification through AAPC within 1 year of hire
- 3 years of medical coding experience
- 1 year of advanced surgical coding experience
Preferred
- Associate degree in Health Information Management
- 4 years of coding experience
Skills
- Knowledge of anatomy, physiology, and medical terminology
- Strong written and verbal communication skills
- Ability to prioritize, maintain accuracy, and handle interruptions
