Certified Coder/Abstractor

Day Kimball Health is hiring a Certified Coder/Abstractor for its Ambulatory Care Unit.

Location: Putnam, CT Shift: Day shift, 40 hours

Under the general supervision of the Coding, Reimbursement & Quality Assurance Supervisor, this role performs all phases of abstracting, diagnosis coding, and transmission of diagnosis codes to the Business Office, including charge capture and posting through record analysis.

Key responsibilities include reviewing medical records for completeness, abstracting and coding clinical data using standard classification systems and facility coding guidelines, documenting coding discrepancies, entering charges for outpatient service locations as appropriate, and working with Revenue Integrity, CDI, Denials Management, and Case Management to resolve coding and billing issues. The role may also retrieve records from ambulatory care or other patient care areas and assemble charts as needed to ensure accurate coding.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education:

  • High school diploma and two years of college, or equivalent, with additional training in medical terminology, anatomy, and physiology required
  • Associate degree preferred

Certifications required at hire or within 6 months:

  • AHIMA: RHIT, CCS, or CCS-P
  • AAPC: CPC or CPC-H

Experience and knowledge:

  • Proficiency with multiple electronic medical record systems or application software
  • In-depth knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and disease processes
  • Knowledge of coding, billing, and the revenue cycle
  • Understanding of medical record coding systems
  • Comprehensive knowledge of ICD-10-CM
  • Familiarity with Medicare/Medicaid E&M, OPPS, APCs, IPPS, and DRG coding concepts
  • Experience with HCPCS coding and pharmaceutical drug types/pricing
  • Additional training with CAC-3M Grouping Software System preferred
