The Billing Specialist is responsible for all aspects of payer billing and reimbursement, including Medicare, Medicaid, commercial insurers, and self-pay patients. This role develops and executes billing processes, ensures regulatory compliance, and works to optimize collections in a startup or growth-stage healthcare environment.
Key responsibilities include managing claims submission, follow-up, denial management, and patient billing for DMEPOS services; ensuring accuracy and compliance in HCPCS coding, modifiers, and payer-specific rules; developing scalable billing workflows and documentation requirements; monitoring and resolving denials, rejections, and delays; managing payer enrollment, credentialing, and policy updates; tracking revenue cycle metrics; evaluating billing software and clearinghouse tools; collaborating on pricing strategy and reimbursement policy; and ensuring HIPAA and CMS compliance.
To qualify for this role, candidates should have:
- A bachelor's degree in healthcare administration, business, or a related field
- 3+ years of medical billing and reimbursement experience
- Deep understanding of DMEPOS billing, Medicare guidelines, and commercial insurance workflows
- Strong knowledge of HCPCS coding, payer rules, CMS documentation standards, and revenue cycle best practices
- Experience with billing software or ERP tools
- Proven ability to develop processes, solve problems, and deliver operational results
- High attention to detail, strong organizational skills, and discretion with PHI
- Comfort working in a dynamic, fast-paced environment
Preferred experience includes:
- Work in a startup, digital health, or medical device company
- Familiarity with payer contracting and reimbursement policy negotiation
