Billing Specialist

The Billing Specialist is an integral part of the organization’s accounting team. This role is responsible for reviewing and preparing invoices, ensuring billing data is accurate and complete, resolving billing issues, and maintaining proper records. The position also supports documentation of processes and recommends improvements to increase effectiveness and efficiency. The role reports to the Chief Financial Officer.

Responsibilities include:

  • Submit reimbursement requests to state, private, and employer insurance
  • Verify patient insurance coverage, obtain pre-authorization when necessary, and confirm deductible and copayment details
  • Follow up on insurance claims, including denials, payments, and requests for additional information
  • Complete the credentialing process for clinicians
  • Research and resolve client billing questions or issues
  • Review and prepare customer invoices
  • Monitor and follow up on outstanding invoices
  • Post payments in financial and electronic medical record systems to individual accounts
  • Work with self-paying patients to develop payment arrangements
  • Maintain patient confidentiality and follow HIPAA regulations
  • Stay current on changes in medical billing and coding guidelines
  • Collaborate with other departments as needed
Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum qualifications include:

  • Associate degree, technical certificate, or equivalent work experience
  • At least 3 years of billing experience with Medicare, Medicaid, and other third-party payers
  • Medical billing certification or mental health billing experience preferred
  • Experience with billing software and electronic medical records; AdvancedMD is a plus
  • Strong customer service skills and attention to detail
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to work under pressure
  • Effective oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple tasks and meet deadlines
  • Proficiency with Outlook, Word, and Excel preferred
