The Billing & Coding Specialist supports a multi-specialty, multi-site practice providing medical, dental, and behavioral health services. This role is responsible for charge capture, coding, billing, reimbursement operations, and education, with a focus on accurate and timely claim submission.
Key responsibilities include:
- Ensuring all completed visits for insured and grant-eligible medical, behavioral health, and dental patients are translated into claims or invoices
- Reviewing coding for accuracy, completeness, and consistency with medical record documentation
- Scrubbing, submitting, monitoring, correcting, and resubmitting claims through a clearinghouse and/or outsourced billing service
- Researching denials, preparing appeals, and identifying root causes to reduce future denials
- Reviewing payments for consistency with contractual terms and rates
- Leading and maintaining billing and coding workflows, processes, SOPs, and documentation
- Developing and leading compliance reviews and documentation education for providers, staff, and leadership
- Supporting new EHR implementation and billing-related troubleshooting
- Monitoring billing dashboards and reviewing accounts receivable with clinic, finance, and leadership teams
- Collaborating with clinic management, providers, staff, and third-party billing services to improve billing and coding operations
- Completing special projects and additional duties as assigned
Requirements & Qualifications
Required qualifications:
- Medical and/or dental coding certification
- Demonstrated experience in ambulatory practice procedure, E&M, medical, behavioral health, and/or dental coding and billing
- Knowledge of medical, behavioral health, and/or dental professional billing terminology
- Knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding and/or dental coding
- Ability to work in MS Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and electronic health records
- Strong written and oral communication skills
- Strong technical and business acumen
- High school diploma or equivalent
Preferred qualifications:
- Associate or bachelor's degree preferred
- 3 years of experience in medical, behavioral health, and/or dental coding and billing
- Experience working with a third-party billing service preferred
- Experience in an FQHC or FQHC look-alike a plus
- Experience with Ryan White and/or Title V funding a plus
