Laboratory Quality Assurance Specialist

The Laboratory Quality Assurance Specialist develops, maintains, and monitors the quality management system for Laboratory Services. Responsibilities include evaluating and implementing patient safety initiatives, regulatory and accreditation compliance, risk management, and performance improvement.

Works with ancillary and patient care departments to develop plans and policies for improved quality outcomes throughout all phases of testing. Manages the external proficiency program, coordinates and prepares departmental reports, and performs activities that promote compliance within laboratory and point-of-care testing sites. Facilitates an annual assessment of the laboratory Quality Assurance program.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Promoting a positive work environment and collaborating with the patient care team
  • Teaching students, clinical staff, and new employees as assigned
  • Reviewing laboratory quality occurrence data and preparing reports and graphical data
  • Managing laboratory proficiency testing and tracking exceptions
  • Coordinating point-of-care testing quality control activities
  • Preparing, implementing, and reviewing laboratory policies and procedures
  • Supporting laboratory and hospital survey readiness and follow-up on deficiencies
  • Preparing presentations for committee meetings and educational programs
  • Coordinating validation plans for new testing and instrumentation
Requirements & Qualifications

Qualifications

Education

  • Bachelor's degree in a related field

Experience

  • Four years of experience in a clinical setting
  • Includes two years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Technologist, or equivalent role

Licenses and certifications

  • One of the following required:
    • ASCP certification as a Medical Technologist, Clinical Laboratory Scientist, Medical Laboratory Scientist, or categorical certification
    • NCA certification as a Clinical Laboratory Scientist
    • AMT certification as a Medical Technologist or Medical Laboratory Scientist

  • Knowledge of laboratory processes and procedures
  • Ability to plan, organize, and delegate functional activities
  • Strong coaching and development skills
  • Strong interpersonal and teamwork skills
  • Attention to detail and high accuracy
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities and heavy workflow
  • Basic computer knowledge, including Hospital/Laboratory Information Systems and office software
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills
