Medical Laboratory Technician I

CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi - Shoreline is a major acute care facility serving the Coastal Bend region, with diagnostic and surgical specialty services in cardiac, cancer, and stroke care. The hospital includes a state-of-the-art emergency department, ICU, Cardiac Cath Lab, and surgical suites, and is affiliated with the Texas A&M University System Health and Science Center College of Medicine.

This role performs clinical laboratory testing in assigned sections such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. The position includes specimen collection and handling, result reporting, quality control, performance improvement, maintenance of equipment, and clerical and phlebotomy duties. The technician also assists with blood product dispensing and supports daily laboratory operations.

Requirements & Qualifications

Education and training

  • Associate degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting CLIA requirements.
  • Must meet one of the following laboratory training pathways:
    • Completed an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks and hold the military occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist, or
    • Completed 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution, including at least 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses or qualifying science coursework.
  • Laboratory training must include either completion of an approved or accredited clinical laboratory training program, or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty performed.

Experience

  • No experience required for graduates of an approved clinical laboratory training program.
  • Or six months of approved clinical laboratory experience including rotations in Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids.

Licenses and certifications

  • Louisiana state licensure required where applicable.
  • New graduates must be board certified or eligible and complete board certification within 1 year of hire, except in Louisiana.
