CHRISTUS Spohn Hospital Corpus Christi - Shoreline is a large acute care medical facility serving the Coastal Bend region. The hospital offers diagnostic and surgical specialty services, including cardiac, cancer, stroke, emergency care, ICU, cardiac cath lab, and surgical suites.
The Medical Laboratory Technician II performs complex clinical testing in assigned laboratory sections such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. The role includes quality control, performance improvement, proficiency testing, equipment maintenance, specimen handling, result reporting, blood product dispensing, and support of daily laboratory operations.
This is a full-time position with multiple shifts available and is an in-person role.
Education and training
- Associate degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent training and experience meeting CLIA requirements.
- Or completion of an approved U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks.
- Or 60 semester hours from an accredited institution, including required science or medical laboratory technology coursework.
- Laboratory training through an accredited program or documented training in each specialty performed.
Experience
- No experience required for graduates of an approved clinical laboratory training program.
- Or six months of approved clinical laboratory experience with rotations in Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids.
- Less than 5 years of experience as a Medical Laboratory Technician.
Licenses and certifications
- MLT certification from ASCP, AMT, AAB, or HEW/HHS required.
- Certification must be kept current if applicable.
- Louisiana state licensure required for Louisiana positions.
- New graduates must be board certified or eligible and complete board certification within 1 year of hire, except in Louisiana.
Skills and abilities
- Ability to perform complex laboratory testing accurately and on time.
- Knowledge of quality control, specimen processing, and laboratory safety standards.
- Ability to use LIS and HIS systems.
- Ability to recognize abnormal or critical values and report them appropriately.
