Medical Laboratory Technician I

Performs clinical testing in assigned laboratory sections such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology, with responsibilities for accurate and timely results, quality control, performance improvement, proficiency testing, and preventive maintenance of equipment.

Also performs clerical, general, and phlebotomy duties related to daily laboratory operations and provides or dispenses blood products as requested by medical staff.

Responsibilities

  • Collect, handle, and process specimens, including venipuncture and fingerstick collection
  • Identify and label specimens accurately and follow processing procedures
  • Perform and report laboratory testing across multiple sections as assigned
  • Recognize critical or improbable results and take appropriate action
  • Perform blood bank procedures, including crossmatching and blood product dispensing
  • Conduct quality control, performance improvement activities, and documentation
  • Complete routine and periodic equipment maintenance and troubleshoot minor issues
  • Restock supplies and reagents as needed
  • Assist in training new associates and students
  • Use LIS and HIS systems to perform, charge, and report results
  • Follow all applicable safety, infection control, compliance, and quality standards
Requirements & Qualifications

Education

  • Associate degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent training and experience meeting CLIA requirements
  • Must meet one of the stated laboratory training pathways, including military medical laboratory training or required semester hours and clinical laboratory training

Experience

  • No experience required for graduates of an approved clinical laboratory training program
  • Or six months of approved clinical laboratory experience with rotations through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids

Certifications and Licensure

  • Louisiana state licensure required in Louisiana
  • New graduates must be board certified or eligible and complete board certification within 1 year of hire, except Louisiana

Additional Qualifications

  • Must be able to complete annual competency assessment
  • Must follow CLIA, CAP, AABB, JCAHO, and OSHA standards
