Performs clinical testing in assigned laboratory sections such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology, ensuring accurate and timely results through quality control, performance improvement, proficiency testing, and preventative maintenance of equipment.
Recognizes abnormal critical values and follows proper notification procedures. Performs clerical, general, and phlebotomy duties related to daily laboratory operations and provides or dispenses blood products as requested by medical staff.
Responsibilities
- Collects, handles, processes, and labels specimens accurately.
- Performs laboratory testing in assigned sections, including Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology.
- Performs blood bank procedures, including crossmatching, antibody identification, and blood product dispensing.
- Operates laboratory automated analyzers according to established procedures.
- Records quality control and performance improvement activities in compliance with policy and regulatory standards.
- Performs daily and periodic preventative maintenance, troubleshoots minor issues, and initiates service calls when needed.
- Restocks supplies and reagents and maintains policy and procedure documentation.
- Uses LIS and HIS systems to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.
- Assists in training new associates and students.
- Follows CAP, AABB, CLIA, JCAHO, OSHA, and facility safety and infection control standards.
Requirements & Qualifications
Education
- Associate degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting CLIA requirements.
- Must meet one of the following laboratory training pathways:
- Completion of an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks and hold the medical laboratory specialist occupational specialty, or
- 60 semester hours from an accredited institution including required science or medical laboratory technology coursework, plus approved clinical laboratory training or documented specialty training.
Experience
- No experience required for graduates of an approved clinical laboratory training program.
- Or six months of approved clinical laboratory experience with rotations in Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids.
Licenses and Certifications
- Louisiana requires state licensure.
- New graduates must be board certified or eligible and complete board certification within 1 year of hire, Louisiana excluded.
