Central Registry Oncology Data Specialist

University of New Mexico

The New Mexico Tumor Registry (NMTR) at the University of New Mexico Comprehensive Cancer Center is seeking an Oncology Data Specialist to review medical records and other information sources to identify new cancer cases and document data related to each patient's diagnosis, treatment, and outcome.

This role supports a population-based cancer registry that collects, maintains, analyzes, and disseminates cancer surveillance data for research and public health use. The specialist will work with the registry team on case finding, abstraction, follow-up, quality control, and quality assurance activities.

The position may require occasional travel within New Mexico and Arizona, as well as participation in regional or national meetings.

Work setting: Hybrid schedule eligible, based on departmental needs.

Requirements & Qualifications

Minimum qualifications

  • Successful completion of at least 60 college-level credit hours
  • No experience required
  • Certified Tumor Registrar (CTR) certification through the National Cancer Registrars Association

Knowledge and skills needed

  • Ability to develop and follow research methodology and protocol
  • Ability to gather data, compile information, and prepare reports
  • Ability to understand, analyze, and interpret medical and forensic information and terminology
  • Ability to read and apply cancer coding, staging, and registry manuals
  • Knowledge of medical data collection codes
  • Ability to verify data input and correct errors
  • Basic data entry and word processing skills
  • Knowledge of patient care charts and patient histories
  • Strong communication skills
  • Ability to work with individuals from diverse backgrounds
  • Ability to travel extensively by car to outreach locations

Other requirements

  • Valid New Mexico driver's license
  • In-state and out-of-state travel required
  • Finalists must provide official educational transcripts if selected
  • Applicants must provide three professional references
