Medical Laboratory Technician I

Performs clinical testing in assigned laboratory sections such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology, ensuring accurate and timely results through quality control, performance improvement, proficiency testing, and preventive maintenance. Recognizes abnormal critical values and notifies medical team members appropriately. Performs clerical, general, and phlebotomy duties related to daily laboratory operations and provides blood products as requested by medical staff.

Responsibilities include:

  • Collecting, handling, processing, and labeling specimens via venipuncture and fingerstick
  • Operating centrifuges and other laboratory equipment
  • Performing laboratory testing in Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, Microbiology, and Blood Bank as designated
  • Recognizing errors or improbable results and taking appropriate action
  • Reporting critical values according to policy and procedure
  • Performing QC, performance improvement activities, and documentation in compliance with CLIA, CAP, AABB, and JCAHO standards
  • Completing daily and periodic preventive maintenance and troubleshooting minor equipment issues
  • Restocking supplies and reagents as needed
  • Using LIS and HIS systems to perform, charge, and report laboratory results
  • Assisting in training new associates and students
  • Following safety, infection control, security, compliance, and hazardous materials protocols
Requirements & Qualifications

Education and Skills

  • Associate degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting CLIA requirements
  • Must meet one of the following eligibility paths:
    • Completion of an approved U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks and hold the military enlisted occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist, or
    • 60 semester hours from an accredited institution including either 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, or 24 semester hours of science courses including chemistry and biology requirements
  • Laboratory training through an approved or accredited clinical laboratory training program, or at least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty for high-complexity testing

Experience

  • No experience required for graduates of an approved clinical laboratory training program
  • Or six months of approved clinical laboratory experience with rotations in Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids

Licenses and Certifications

  • Louisiana state licensure required for Louisiana positions
  • New graduates must be board certified or eligible
  • Board certification must be completed within 1 year of hire, unless Louisiana is excluded
