Performs clinical testing in assigned laboratory sections such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology. Responsible for accurate and timely results, quality control, performance improvement, proficiency testing, preventative maintenance of equipment, and clerical, general, and phlebotomy duties related to daily laboratory operations.
Also recognizes abnormal critical values and notifies medical team members as needed. Provides and dispenses blood products as requested by medical staff.
Associate degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting CLIA requirements.
Must meet one of the following:
- Successful completion of an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks and hold the military enlisted occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist, or
- 60 semester hours or equivalent from an accredited institution including at least 24 semester hours of medical laboratory technology courses, or 24 semester hours of science courses with chemistry and biology requirements.
Laboratory training must include completion of a clinical laboratory training program approved or accredited by ABHES, NAACLS, or another HHS-approved organization, or at least three months documented laboratory training in each specialty performed.
Experience:
- No experience required for graduates of an approved clinical laboratory training program, or
- Six months of approved clinical laboratory experience including rotation through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids.
Licenses/Certifications:
- Louisiana state licensure required.
- New graduates must be board certified or eligible and complete board certification within one year of hire, Louisiana excluded.
