The Molecular Laboratory Technologist/Technician performs high-complexity molecular testing, including DNA/RNA extraction, RT-PCR, data analysis, and interpretation of infectious disease panels.
Responsibilities include:
- Independently and accurately perform routine and complex molecular testing, including DNA/RNA extraction and PCR
- Review preliminary and final test results
- Assist in resolving technical problems according to laboratory policies and procedures
- Record, compile, and maintain records to ensure compliance with state and federal regulations for reagents, procedures, and equipment used in testing
- Assist in developing, evaluating, and implementing new procedures and protocols
- Maintain patient confidentiality
- Coordinate daily communication with physicians and other parties
- Participate in educational activities
- Perform other related duties as required
Requirements & Qualifications
Qualifications and requirements:
- Doctorate, master's, or bachelor's degree in laboratory science
- Associate degree in laboratory science or 60 semester hours, including 24 semester hours of medical lab technology
- Or 60 semester hours including 24 hours of science with chemistry and biology coursework, plus laboratory training
- Prior qualification under federal regulations may be accepted as described in CLIA options
- High school degree with documented high-complexity testing training may qualify under certain federal grandfathering provisions
- Medical Laboratory Specialist training from the U.S. Military (50-week course) prior to April 25, 1995 may qualify
- 1 to 2 years of experience in a molecular CLIA-licensed clinical laboratory preferred
- Medical Technologist board certification preferred
- Ability to read and comprehend English and follow instructions
- Good communication and critical thinking skills
- Understanding of statistics
- Ability to think creatively under pressure and work in high-stress, changing environments with possible irregular hours
- Ability to recognize potential exposure to bloodborne pathogens and hazardous chemicals and follow safety protocols
- Must demonstrate competency for required diagnostic tests and assigned areas within 3 months of hire
