Medical Laboratory Technician I

Performs clinical testing in assigned laboratory sections such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology, with responsibility for accurate and timely results, quality control, performance improvement, proficiency testing, and preventative maintenance of equipment.

Recognizes abnormal or critical values and follows proper procedures for notifying medical team members. Performs clerical, general, and phlebotomy duties related to daily laboratory operations. Provides and dispenses blood products as requested by medical staff.

Responsibilities

  • Meet applicable OneCHRISTUS competencies and support company philosophy and core values.
  • Collect, handle, process, and label specimens accurately using venipuncture and/or fingerstick.
  • Perform laboratory testing as assigned in Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, Microbiology, and Blood Bank.
  • Recognize errors or improbable results and take appropriate action.
  • Report critical values according to policy and procedure.
  • Perform QC, performance improvement activities, and documentation in compliance with regulatory standards.
  • Complete daily and periodic preventative maintenance, troubleshoot minor equipment issues, and coordinate service calls as needed.
  • Restock supplies and reagents, review policy manuals, and manage reagent dating and expiration.
  • Assist in training new associates and students.
  • Use LIS and HIS systems to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.
  • Follow safety, infection control, security, compliance, and hazardous materials procedures.
  • Complete annual competency assessments successfully and on time.
Requirements & Qualifications

Education

  • Associate degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent training and experience meeting CLIA requirements.
  • Must meet one of the following laboratory training pathways:
    • Completed an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks and hold the military occupational specialty of medical laboratory specialist, or
    • Completed 60 semester hours from an accredited institution including required science or medical laboratory technology coursework, plus approved clinical laboratory training or documented specialty training.

Experience

  • No experience required for graduates of an approved clinical laboratory training program.
  • Or six months of approved clinical laboratory experience with rotations through Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids.

Licenses and Certifications

  • Louisiana state licensure required where applicable.
  • New graduates must be board certified or board eligible and complete board certification within 1 year of hire, Louisiana excluded.
