Under the direction of the Referral Supervisor, this position assists patients with referral needs and helps connect patient services with outside resources.
Key responsibilities:
- Process referrals for insured and uninsured patients throughout Los Angeles County using Medpoint System for insured patients and the Referral Processing System (RPS) and eConsult for uninsured patients.
- Process referrals for patients with private HMO and PPO insurance plans.
- Verify patient insurance status and determine eligibility and appropriate specialist resources.
- Direct uninsured patients to public resources when appropriate.
- Arrange in-house services such as retinal screening and telederm for uninsured patients.
- Communicate daily with Health Care LA IPA, RPS, and eConsult to check referral status.
- Notify patients of referral approvals by phone and mail.
- Send necessary documents to specialists by fax.
- Request reports from specialists and scan them into eCW, assigning them to the appropriate physician.
- Track referral status and maintain documentation in eCW until reports are received.
- Attend monthly utilization management meetings for Health Care LA IPA, eConsult, and RPS systems as designated.
- Prepare monthly productivity reports.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Requirements & Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent preferred
- Experience in a community clinic preferred
- Knowledge of medical terminology
- Ability to work effectively with people from diverse cultural, educational, social, and economic backgrounds
- Excellent oral and written communication skills
- Strong organizational skills
- Computer proficiency
- Experience using an Electronic Medical Records (EMR) system is highly desirable
- Bilingual required
