Performs clinical testing in assigned laboratory sections such as general laboratory, Blood Bank, and Microbiology, ensuring accurate and timely results. Responsibilities include quality control, performance improvement, proficiency testing, preventative maintenance of equipment, recognition of abnormal critical values, and notification of the medical team when needed. Also performs clerical, general, and phlebotomy duties related to daily laboratory operations and provides/dispenses blood products as requested by medical staff.
Responsibilities

- Collect, handle, process, and identify specimens via venipuncture and/or fingerstick.
- Operate centrifuges, pneumatic tube systems, and other specimen-processing equipment.
- Perform laboratory testing in designated sections such as Hematology, Urinalysis, Coagulation, Chemistry, Special Chemistry, ER Stat Lab, and Microbiology.
- Perform blood bank procedures including crossmatching, antibody identification, and dispensing blood products.
- Operate automated laboratory analyzers according to established procedures.
- Recognize errors or improbable results and report critical values per policy and procedure.
- Perform, analyze, and record quality control and performance improvement indicators.
- Complete daily and periodic preventative maintenance, troubleshoot minor issues, and initiate service calls as needed.
- Order and restock supplies and reagents, review policy and procedure manuals, and manage reagent expiration.
- Support training of new associates and students in laboratory practices.
- Follow CAP, AABB, Compliance, CLIA, JCAHO, OSHA, and safety/infection control standards.
- Use LIS and HIS systems to perform, charge, and report laboratory results.
- Complete annual competency assessments successfully and on time.
Requirements & Qualifications
Qualifications
- Associate degree or higher in clinical laboratory science or medical laboratory technology from an accredited institution, or equivalent laboratory training and experience meeting CLIA requirements.
- Accepted pathways include:
- Completion of an official U.S. military medical laboratory procedures training course of at least 50 weeks and current military occupational specialty as a medical laboratory specialist.
- 60 semester hours from an accredited institution including required medical laboratory technology or science coursework.
- Laboratory training approved or accredited by ABHES, NAACLS, or another organization approved by HHS.
- At least three months of documented laboratory training in each specialty for high-complexity testing.
- No experience required for graduates of approved clinical laboratory training programs.
- Or six months of approved clinical laboratory experience including clinical rotations in Blood Banking, Microbiology, Chemistry, Hematology, Immunology, and Urinalysis/Body Fluids.
- Louisiana state licensure required where applicable.
- New graduates must be board certified or eligible and complete board certification within one year of hire, Louisiana excluded.
