A retinal polarization scan is a diagnostic procedure that utilizes modulated polarized light to assess the retina's condition, specifically focusing on the fovea, which is the central part of the retina responsible for sharp vision. This scan is designed to detect changes in polarization as the light passes through the unique arrangement of nerve fibers in this area. The primary purpose of the retinal polarization scan is to identify strabismus, a condition characterized by misalignment of the eyes, as well as other defocusing issues that can result in small angles of visual misalignment. Such misalignments can potentially lead to amblyopia, commonly known as "lazy eye," if not addressed. During the procedure, each eye undergoes a circular scanning motion using polarized near-infrared light, which allows for a comprehensive evaluation of the retina. The device captures the polarization-related changes in the light that is reflected back from the ocular fundus, which is the interior surface of the eye. Following the scan, the device generates an automated report that provides insights into the findings, aiding healthcare professionals in making informed decisions regarding patient care.
