Fibroadenomas can present as palpable masses or may be identified as abnormalities on mammograms. The procedure utilizes ultrasound guidance to accurately locate the fibroadenoma within the breast tissue. Once the tumor is identified, a specialized probe is inserted into the mass. This probe typically contains liquid nitrogen, which is used to cool the tissue to temperatures below -20 degrees Celsius. The application of extreme cold effectively destroys the tumor cells while preserving the surrounding healthy tissue. The process is designed to create well-defined borders of cell destruction, ensuring that the fibroadenoma is ablated in situ, meaning the procedure is performed directly at the site of the tumor without the need for surgical excision.
