The procedure described by CPT® Code 23930 involves the incision and drainage of a deep abscess or hematoma located in the upper arm or elbow area. This surgical intervention is necessary when there is a collection of pus or blood that has formed within the soft tissues, which may include the areas overlying the humeral shaft, distal humerus, and elbow joint. The primary goal of this procedure is to relieve pressure, remove infected material, and promote healing. During the procedure, the surgeon makes an incision in the skin to access the abscess or hematoma, allowing for the drainage of the accumulated fluid. The approach taken by the surgeon is determined by the specific location of the abscess or hematoma. Once the pocket of pus or blood is located, the wall of the abscess or hematoma is incised, and the contents are drained. In cases where the abscess is large, additional steps may be taken to probe the pocket to break down any loculations, ensuring that all infected material is adequately removed. After drainage, the site may be flushed with an antibiotic solution or normal saline to help prevent further infection. Depending on the clinical situation, the incision may be left open to allow for continued drainage, packed with gauze, or closed to facilitate healing.
