A ganglion cyst is a small, benign cystic tumor that typically forms in the wrist area, either on the dorsal (top) or volar (bottom) side. These cysts are filled with a jelly-like fluid and are often connected to a joint membrane or a tendon sheath. The excision of a ganglion cyst involves a surgical procedure where the physician makes an incision through the skin and subcutaneous tissues to access the cyst. Once the cyst is located, it is carefully dissected from the surrounding tissues and removed from its attachment to the joint membrane or tendon. This procedure is coded as CPT® Code 25111 when it is the initial excision of a primary ganglion cyst. In cases where a ganglion cyst recurs, a different code, CPT® Code 25112, is used to indicate the re-excision of the cyst.
