A ganglion cyst is a small, benign cystic tumor that typically forms in the wrist area, either on the dorsal (top) or volar (bottom) side. These cysts are filled with a jelly-like fluid and are often connected to a joint membrane or a tendon sheath. The excision of a ganglion cyst involves a surgical procedure where the physician makes an incision through the skin and subcutaneous tissues to access the cyst. During the procedure, the surgeon carefully dissects the cyst free from the surrounding tissues to ensure complete removal. This procedure is specifically indicated for recurrent ganglion cysts, which are cysts that have returned after an initial excision. For the initial excision of a primary ganglion cyst, the CPT® code 25111 is used, while CPT® code 25112 is designated for cases where a recurrent cyst requires re-excision.
