A Velpeau cast is a specialized type of cast used primarily to immobilize the shoulder region, particularly in cases of shoulder injuries. The procedure involves positioning the injured arm across the chest, which is a critical step in ensuring proper immobilization. To secure the arm, a swaddling bandage is utilized, starting from beneath the axilla (armpit) on the uninjured side. This bandage is wrapped around the back, traversing over the injured shoulder and arm, and passing just below the elbow before returning under the uninjured axilla and around the chest. This method effectively secures the arm against the chest, minimizing movement and promoting healing. Following the application of the bandage, a plaster or fiberglass cast is then applied over the bandage. This additional layer serves to completely immobilize the shoulder, providing the necessary support and protection to facilitate recovery from the injury. The Velpeau cast is particularly beneficial in managing certain shoulder conditions, ensuring that the affected area remains stable during the healing process.
