Diagnostic anoscopy is a medical procedure that involves the visual inspection of the anus and the anal canal. During this procedure, a specialized instrument known as an anoscope is utilized. The anoscope is inserted into the anus using a technique that involves a gentle advancing and twisting motion while the patient bears down, which helps facilitate the insertion. Once the anoscope is fully inserted, a blunt tip obturator is removed, allowing for direct visualization of the anal canal through an attached eyepiece. This enables the healthcare provider to carefully examine the mucosal lining for any areas that may exhibit abnormal tissue characteristics. In cases where further evaluation is necessary, high-resolution anoscopy (HRA) may be performed, which incorporates advanced magnification techniques and chemical enhancement to better visualize and assess potential dysplastic changes in the anal mucosa. This procedure is particularly relevant for patients who have previously undergone abnormal anal cytology tests or anal Pap smears, as it allows for the collection of cell samples through brushing or washing techniques for laboratory analysis. The diagnostic anoscopy procedure is classified as a separate procedure, emphasizing its distinct nature in the context of anal examinations.
