Common Language Description

Diagnostic anoscopy is a medical procedure that involves the visual inspection of the anus using a specialized instrument called an anoscope. This procedure is performed to evaluate the anal canal and surrounding tissues for any abnormalities. During the process, a blunt tip obturator is inserted into the anoscope, which is then carefully introduced into the anus using a twisting motion while the patient bears down to facilitate insertion. Once the anoscope is fully inserted, the obturator is removed, and an eyepiece is attached to allow for direct visualization of the anal canal. The anoscope is then withdrawn, enabling the healthcare provider to meticulously inspect the mucosal lining for any areas that may appear abnormal. In the context of CPT® Code 46601, this diagnostic anoscopy is enhanced by high-resolution magnification (HRA) and the application of chemical agents. High-resolution anoscopy is particularly indicated for further assessment of anal dysplasia in patients who have previously received abnormal results from anal cytology tests or anal Pap smears. The procedure utilizes a high-resolution magnifying device, such as a colposcope or operating microscope, to provide a detailed view of the anal mucosa. To improve visualization, a mildly acidic chemical agent, such as 3 percent acetic acid, is applied to any suspicious areas. This chemical enhancement aids in highlighting abnormal tissue during the examination. Additionally, cell samples may be collected from the mucosal lining through brushing or by washing the area with water, which is then aspirated to obtain the samples. These cytology samples are subsequently sent for laboratory analysis, which is reported separately.
