The procedure described by CPT® Code 52351 involves a cystourethroscopy combined with ureteroscopy and/or pyeloscopy for diagnostic purposes. This procedure begins with the cleansing of the urethra using an antiseptic solution to minimize the risk of infection. A cystoscope, which can be either rigid or flexible, is then inserted through the urethra and into the bladder. To enhance visibility of the bladder wall during the examination, sterile saline may be introduced into the bladder. After a thorough inspection of the bladder, a guidewire is carefully placed through the cystoscope and advanced into the first ureter, continuing through the ureter to reach the renal pelvis. Following this step, the cystoscope is removed, and a ureteroscope is advanced over the guidewire into the renal pelvis for further inspection. The guidewire is subsequently removed, allowing for a detailed examination of the renal pelvis and any noted abnormalities. The ureteroscope is then gradually withdrawn, inspecting the entire length of the ureter. If necessary, the diagnostic ureteroscopy and/or pyeloscopy is performed on the opposite ureter to ensure a comprehensive evaluation. Upon completion of the procedure, the ureteroscope is removed, concluding the diagnostic assessment of the urinary tract.
