The procedure described by CPT® Code 65210 involves the removal of a foreign body that has become embedded in the external structures of the eye, specifically the conjunctiva, subconjunctiva, or sclera. The conjunctiva is a delicate mucous membrane that covers the front surface of the eyeball and lines the inner surface of the eyelids. It plays a crucial role in protecting the eye and maintaining moisture. The subconjunctiva refers to the layer of tissue located just beneath the conjunctiva, while the sclera is the tough, fibrous outer layer of the eye, commonly known as the white of the eye. During this procedure, the eye is thoroughly examined to locate the foreign body, which may include various materials that have inadvertently entered the eye. Anesthetic eye drops may be administered to ensure patient comfort during the procedure. Unlike the removal of superficial foreign bodies, which can be accomplished through saline irrigation or the use of a cotton swab as indicated in CPT® Code 65205, the removal of an embedded foreign body requires more precise techniques. In this case, a cotton-tipped swab or forceps is utilized to extract the foreign object from the conjunctival, subconjunctival, or scleral tissue. Following the removal, the eye is copiously irrigated with saline solution to cleanse the area and prevent any potential complications.
