The procedure described by CPT® Code 66840 involves the removal of lens material from the eye using an aspiration technique. This surgical intervention is typically performed when there is a need to extract lens material that may be causing visual impairment or other complications. The process begins with the visualization of the eye through an operating microscope, which allows the surgeon to have a clear view of the anterior chamber of the eye. Access to this chamber is achieved by creating one or more small openings, known as paracenteses, using a needle or blade. Once access is established, an irrigation and aspiration tool is introduced into the anterior chamber through these openings. The surgeon then carefully pulls the lens material from the outer edges towards the center of the pupil, ensuring that the material is aspirated effectively. Throughout the procedure, the intraocular pressure is monitored, and if necessary, fluid may be injected to maintain normal pressure within the anterior chamber. After the lens material has been successfully removed, the instruments are withdrawn, and the surgeon checks the incision sites for any signs of fluid leakage. Depending on the condition of the incisions, sutures may be applied to ensure proper closure and healing.
