The CPT® Code 66940 refers to the procedure of removing lens material using an extracapsular technique. This surgical intervention is typically performed to address cataracts or other conditions that necessitate the extraction of lens material from the eye. In this procedure, the eye is carefully visualized through an operating microscope, which allows the surgeon to perform the operation with precision. An incision is made in the cornea, positioned close to the scleral border, to provide access to the lens capsule. A circular tear is then created in the anterior portion of the lens capsule, which is subsequently opened to facilitate the removal of the lens material. The extraction of the lens material is accomplished using specialized instruments and/or suction devices, ensuring that the procedure is conducted efficiently and safely. After the lens material has been successfully removed, the incision is meticulously closed with sutures to promote proper healing and recovery. This procedure is distinct from other related codes, such as 66840, 66850, and 66852, which refer to different methods or techniques of lens removal.
