The procedure described by CPT® Code 69433 involves a tympanostomy, which is a surgical intervention aimed at addressing issues related to the middle ear, specifically chronic otitis media and Eustachian tube dysfunction. Chronic otitis media refers to persistent inflammation or infection of the middle ear, while Eustachian tube dysfunction occurs when the Eustachian tube, a narrow passage connecting the middle ear to the back of the nose, fails to open and close properly. This dysfunction can lead to the trapping of air in the middle ear, resulting in negative pressure that can retract the tympanic membrane, commonly known as the eardrum. The procedure entails making a small incision in the tympanic membrane to allow for the removal of any accumulated fluid within the middle ear through suction aspiration. Following this, the Eustachian tube is opened by inflating it with air, which helps restore normal function. To maintain the opening created in the tympanic membrane, a ventilating tube is inserted. This procedure is performed under local or topical anesthesia, making it less invasive and allowing for quicker recovery compared to general anesthesia. It is important to note that if general anesthesia is required, CPT® Code 69436 should be used instead.
