A radiologic examination of the lumbosacral spine, designated by CPT® Code 72100, involves the use of X-ray technology to capture images of the lower back region, specifically the lumbosacral area where the lumbar spine meets the sacrum. This procedure typically includes two or three distinct views, which are essential for providing a comprehensive assessment of the spine's structure and any potential abnormalities. The most common projections utilized during this examination are frontal, posteroanterior, and lateral views. X-ray imaging operates on the principle of ionizing radiation, which passes through the body and is absorbed differently by various tissues based on their density and composition. This differential absorption allows for the creation of a two-dimensional (2D) image that reveals the internal structures of the lumbosacral spine. It is important to note that if four or more views are taken, the appropriate code to report would be CPT® Code 72110, while a complete examination, which includes a minimum of six views, is reported with CPT® Code 72114. This complete exam may incorporate additional views taken from oblique angles and in various positions, such as flexion and extension, to provide a thorough evaluation, particularly in cases of trauma.
