Common Language Description

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a sophisticated imaging technique utilized to visualize the thoracic spinal canal and its contents. This noninvasive procedure employs the magnetic properties of hydrogen nuclei found in the body, allowing for detailed imaging without the use of ionizing radiation. During the MRI process, a powerful magnetic field is generated, which causes the hydrogen atoms in the body to align with the magnetic field. Subsequently, radiowaves are transmitted into this magnetic field, prompting the protons within the hydrogen nuclei to emit specific radiofrequency signals. These signals are captured by a computer, which processes the data to produce high-resolution tomographic images in three-dimensional slices. The patient undergoing this procedure is positioned on a motorized table that moves into a large MRI scanner, often referred to as a tunnel. MRI scans of the thoracic spine are typically indicated when conservative treatments for back or neck pain have proven ineffective, prompting the need for further investigation or consideration of more aggressive treatment options. Additionally, MRI may be performed post-surgery to assess any changes or complications. It is important to note that CPT® Code 72146 specifically refers to MRI of the thoracic spinal canal without the use of contrast material, distinguishing it from CPT® Code 72147, which involves the administration of a contrast dye to enhance the visibility of the spinal area. The resulting images are critically reviewed by the physician to identify potential issues such as abnormal spinal alignment, vertebral body diseases or injuries, intervertebral disc conditions, and nerve-related problems, all of which may correlate with the patient's clinical symptoms.
