Common Language Description

Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is a sophisticated imaging technique utilized to visualize the internal structures of the body, particularly the joints of the upper extremity, such as the shoulder, elbow, wrist, and hand. This noninvasive procedure employs powerful magnets and radio waves to generate detailed images without the use of ionizing radiation, making it a safer alternative to traditional imaging methods like X-rays or CT scans. During the MRI process, the patient is positioned on a motorized table that moves into a large, cylindrical scanner, which houses the magnet. The magnetic field created by the scanner aligns the hydrogen atoms present in the body, primarily found in water and fat. Once aligned, radiofrequency pulses are applied, causing these protons to emit signals that are captured and processed by a computer. The resulting images are high-resolution, three-dimensional representations of the joint, allowing for a comprehensive assessment of its condition. MRI is particularly valuable in diagnosing various musculoskeletal issues, including injuries, trauma, unexplained pain, swelling, and loss of motion in the joint. The absence of contrast material in CPT® Code 73221 indicates that the imaging is performed without any additional substances to enhance visibility, focusing solely on the natural contrast provided by the body's tissues. This procedure is essential for identifying a range of conditions, such as tumors, infections, inflammation, and other abnormalities affecting the joint and surrounding soft tissues.
