The CPT® Code 82016 refers to a qualitative test for acylcarnitines, which are compounds involved in the metabolism of fatty acids. This blood test is designed to identify the presence or absence of acylcarnitines in the blood, providing crucial information for diagnosing certain metabolic disorders. The test is particularly significant in newborn screening programs, where it is routinely performed on infants to detect conditions related to fatty acid beta-oxidation and organic aciduria disorders. However, it is not limited to infants; the test may also be conducted at any age if symptoms indicative of these metabolic disorders are present. To perform the test, a blood sample is collected, which can be obtained through a venipuncture or a capillary draw, both of which are separately reportable procedures. The analysis of the blood sample is conducted using low injection analysis-tandem mass spectrometry, a sophisticated technique that allows for precise identification of acylcarnitines. Each specimen obtained for this test must be reported using the CPT® Code 82016, ensuring accurate tracking and billing for the procedure.
