Common Language Description

The CPT® Code 82017 refers to a quantitative test for acylcarnitines, which are compounds involved in the metabolism of fatty acids. This blood test is specifically designed to measure the levels of acylcarnitines in the blood, providing critical information for diagnosing metabolic disorders. The qualitative counterpart, CPT® Code 82016, identifies the presence or absence of acylcarnitines and is commonly performed as part of newborn screening to detect conditions such as fatty acid beta-oxidation disorders and organic acidurias. While the qualitative test is routinely conducted on infants, the quantitative test can be performed at any age when symptoms indicative of these metabolic disorders are present. To conduct the test, a blood sample is collected through a venipuncture or capillary draw, which is a separately reportable procedure. The collected plasma or whole blood is then analyzed using low injection analysis-tandem mass spectrometry, a sophisticated technique that allows for precise measurement of acylcarnitine levels. The results of the quantitative test can indicate specific elevations in acylcarnitines, such as Elevated Isolated C4 Acylcarnitine, Elevated Isolated C5 Acylcarnitine, or elevations of C8, C6, and C10 Acylcarnitine. Each specimen obtained for this test must be reported using CPT® Code 82017, ensuring accurate tracking and billing for the laboratory services provided.
