CPT® Code 88108 refers to a specific laboratory test known as cytopathology, which employs a concentration technique for the preparation of smears and their subsequent interpretation, such as the Saccomanno technique. This procedure is essential for diagnosing a variety of conditions, including malignant and premalignant diseases, infectious or autoimmune diseases, inflammation, immune reactions, cell aging, and amyloidosis. Cytopathology itself is the microscopic examination of cells that either naturally exfoliate from body surfaces or can be collected through methods such as washing or brushing. The concentration technique is particularly effective when applied to sputum samples, although it can also be utilized for processing other types of body fluids. During the procedure, a sample is obtained through a separately reportable method, after which the entire sample is homogenized to ensure uniformity. Subsequently, droplets of this homogenized sample are placed onto glass slides, where they are smeared and fixed in place for analysis. A pathologist then examines the prepared slides under a microscope and generates a detailed written report of the findings. This concentration technique enhances the diagnostic yield and significantly reduces the likelihood of false negative results, making it a valuable tool in cytopathological assessments.
