2. Procedure

The procedure for CPT® Code 88235 involves several critical steps to ensure the successful culture of amniotic fluid or chorionic villus cells:

• Step 1: Sample Collection - The first step involves performing an amniocentesis or chorionic villus sampling (CVS) to collect the necessary specimens. For amniocentesis, a needle is carefully inserted into the amniotic sac to withdraw amniotic fluid, which contains fetal cells. In the case of CVS, a small sample of placental tissue is obtained, and care is taken to avoid contamination with maternal blood.
• Step 2: Specimen Preparation - Once the samples are collected, they are placed in sterile screw-top tubes to prevent contamination and maintain the viability of the cells. If a CVS specimen is obtained, any blood clots are meticulously removed using sterile gloves and a stereomicroscope before placing the specimen in the culture medium.
