Common Language Description

A semen analysis is a laboratory test that assesses the characteristics of a man's semen, specifically focusing on the presence and motility of sperm. This analysis is crucial for evaluating male fertility. The procedure involves measuring the total sperm count, which is the number of sperm present in a milliliter of semen. A normal sperm count is defined as 20 million sperm per milliliter or more. Additionally, the motility of the sperm is evaluated, which refers to the ability of sperm to move actively and effectively. This is important because motile sperm are necessary for successful fertilization, as they must travel from the site of deposition to the egg for conception to occur. A normal motility count is considered to be 8 million motile sperm per milliliter or higher. It is important to note that this specific CPT® code, 89310, is used when assessing motility and count, but does not include the Huhner test. For a more comprehensive analysis that includes volume and differential evaluation, the CPT® code 89320 should be utilized. The volume assessment measures the total amount of semen produced in a single ejaculation, while the differential evaluation examines the morphology of sperm, determining how many appear normal under microscopic observation.
