Common Language Description

A semen analysis is a laboratory test conducted to assess various parameters of semen in a single ejaculation. This analysis includes measuring the total volume of semen, which is crucial for understanding male fertility. The volume is quantified in milliliters, and a normal semen volume is typically considered to be between 1.5 to 5 milliliters. Additionally, the analysis evaluates the sperm count, which refers to the number of sperm present per milliliter of semen. A normal sperm count is defined as 20 million sperm per milliliter or more. The motility of sperm, which indicates the movement and activity level of the sperm, is also assessed. Sperm motility is essential for fertility, as motile sperm must travel through the female reproductive tract to reach and fertilize an egg. A normal motility count is defined as having 8 million motile sperm per milliliter or higher. Furthermore, the analysis includes a differential count using strict morphologic criteria, such as those established by Kruger. This involves preparing a stained slide and examining several hundred sperm under a microscope to identify structural abnormalities in the head, neck, or tail of the sperm. This detailed morphologic evaluation is critical for accurately determining the proportion of normal versus abnormal sperm, providing valuable insights into male reproductive health.
