Gastrointestinal tract imaging, specifically through intraluminal methods, involves a non-invasive procedure where a patient ingests an endoscopic capsule. This capsule is designed to travel through the gastrointestinal (GI) tract, providing detailed imaging from the esophagus to the ileum. Prior to the procedure, the patient is required to fast for a duration of 10 hours to ensure optimal imaging conditions. Once the capsule is swallowed, the patient wears a data recorder around their waist, which captures and stores the data transmitted from the capsule as it progresses through the GI tract. This allows the patient to continue with their daily activities without interruption. The capsule captures color video images of the internal surfaces of the GI tract lumen, which are later reviewed and interpreted by a healthcare professional. It is important to note that for imaging specifically of the esophagus, the CPT® code 91111 should be used, while CPT® code 91110 is designated for imaging that extends from the esophagus through to the ileum.
