1. Indications

The pulsed irrigation evacuation (PIE) procedure is indicated for patients experiencing chronic constipation, particularly in cases where there is an absence of voluntary bowel control. This may include individuals with conditions such as:

• Chronic Constipation Patients who have persistent difficulty in passing stool, leading to fecal impaction.
• Paraplegia Individuals with paralysis of the lower half of the body, which can result in loss of bowel control.
• Neurological Disorders Conditions affecting the nervous system that impair normal bowel function.

2. Procedure

The pulsed irrigation evacuation (PIE) procedure involves several key steps to ensure effective fecal impaction removal. Each step is critical to the success of the procedure:

• Step 1: Preparation The patient is positioned comfortably, typically in a left lateral position, to facilitate the procedure. The healthcare provider prepares the necessary equipment, including the automated enema system, which is designed to deliver pulsed irrigation.
• Step 2: Administration of Irrigation The automated enema device is connected to a source of warm saline or other appropriate irrigation solution. The device is then activated to deliver pulsed irrigation into the rectum. This pulsed action helps to break up and dislodge the impacted fecal matter.
• Step 3: Evacuation As the irrigation solution is administered, the provider monitors the patient for any signs of discomfort or complications. The pulsed irrigation continues until the fecal impaction is adequately addressed, allowing for the evacuation of the dislodged stool.
• Step 4: Post-Procedure Assessment After the procedure, the healthcare provider assesses the patient's condition to ensure that the fecal impaction has been resolved and that there are no adverse effects from the irrigation process.

3. Post-Procedure
