Select picture audiometry, identified by CPT® Code 92583, is a specialized hearing test designed primarily for younger children to assess their auditory capabilities. This procedure utilizes a picture board that features images of familiar objects, such as an airplane, hotdog, cupcake, and sailboat, which are easily recognizable to children. Each of these images corresponds to spondees, which are two-syllable words pronounced with equal stress on both syllables, facilitating the assessment of the child's hearing ability. During the test, the child is equipped with earphones and is instructed to touch or point to the pictures as they hear them. The testing begins at a decibel level of 50 dB, and the clinician poses questions like 'Can you point to the airplane?' or 'Where is the cupcake?' to guide the child. The decibel level is systematically reduced in increments of 5 dB until the child can no longer hear the sounds or follow the instructions. The clinician meticulously records the child's responses on a picture graph, which visually represents the child's hearing ability and their capacity to correctly identify the objects at varying decibel levels. Following the completion of the test, a comprehensive written report detailing the findings is generated, providing valuable insights into the child's hearing status.
