Common Language Description

Health and behavior intervention services, as defined by CPT® Code 96154, are specialized therapeutic procedures aimed at enhancing health outcomes and overall well-being. These interventions may encompass a variety of techniques, including cognitive, behavioral, social, and psychophysiological methods. The primary goal of these services is to mitigate the frequency and severity of health-related issues while promoting better treatment outcomes. The interventions are tailored specifically to the individual patient, based on a comprehensive assessment that is separately reportable. Qualified healthcare professionals, such as physicians, psychologists, advanced practice nurses, or clinical social workers, who possess specialized training in health and behavior interventions, are authorized to deliver these services. The interventions may involve educating patients and their families about the biopsychosocial factors that influence health, employing stress reduction techniques like relaxation exercises and guided imagery, and facilitating social support through group discussions and social skills training. Family involvement is a critical component, particularly when family dynamics contribute to the patient's health challenges. Providers may work with families to enhance communication, resolve conflicts, and develop problem-solving skills, offering guidance during sessions and suggesting interpersonal exercises for practice at home. For parents of young children, behavior modification strategies, such as praise and reward systems or distraction techniques, may be introduced to alleviate fear and anxiety. In the context of terminal illness, caregivers may receive support and instruction on effective communication, pain management, and navigating the complexities associated with end-of-life issues. Each session of family intervention is billed in 15-minute increments, allowing for precise tracking of the time spent on these essential services.
