Medical Records Specialist III

The Medical Records Specialist, under the direction of the Medical Records Manager, will file and retrieve patients' medical records, ensuring that information is accurate and complete. Other tasks include scanning documents to update electronic health and medical records. All Medical Records specialists should be familiar with HIPAA compliance requirements.

Key responsibilities include greeting patients professionally, filing documents in patient charts, checking charts for accuracy and completeness, updating electronic health records in the EMR system, responding to release of information (ROI) requests, following HIPAA regulations, assisting with clerical tasks, escalating issues to supervisors, and participating in department meetings and projects.

This position requires attention to detail, organizational and time management skills, good interpersonal and communication skills, and the ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment. Proficiency with word processing, spreadsheets, email applications, and EMR systems (athenaOne preferred) is necessary.

Physical requirements involve visual and auditory acuity for communication, use of office equipment like PCs, copiers, fax, and phones, occasional light lifting (up to 20 pounds), and some offsite travel.

Requirements & Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED
  • Minimum of 2 years medical office experience required; radiology or imaging experience strongly preferred
  • Minimum of 2 years EMR experience; athenaOne experience strongly preferred
  • Medical Records related experience preferred
  • General computer skills including word processing, spreadsheet, and email applications
  • Detail-oriented with good analytical and organizational skills
  • Good interpersonal skills and ability to work cohesively within a team
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Ability to manage a variety of tasks effectively
  • Communication skills for telephone and in-person interactions
  • Ability to gather and interpret data
  • Ability to work independently in a fast-paced environment
