Medical Records Specialist

We are seeking a dedicated and detail-oriented Medical Records Specialist to join our team! In this role, you will be responsible for receiving, validating, documenting, and responding to requests for information contained in legal medical records. You will handle inquiries from healthcare organizations, attorneys, insurance companies, patients, and other interested third parties in a timely and efficient manner.

Location: Onsite - Sioux City, IA

Hours: Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30pm

Responsibilities:

  • Prepare medical information according to facility policies, state and federal laws for requests from patients, family members, insurance companies, attorneys, subpoenas, physicians, other health care facilities, and third parties.
  • Notify appropriate departments of any court orders/subpoenas.
  • Log and fulfill requests or submit to approved vendor.
  • Complete invoicing and follow up on payments.
  • Ensure receipt and validation of HIPAA compliant authorizations.
  • Collaborate with departments to resolve document and HIPAA request issues.
  • Prioritize and respond to release of information requests promptly.
  • Perform self-quality checks to ensure accuracy, completeness, confidentiality, and proper invoicing.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patient and facility information.

Customer Service:

  • Promptly and courteously answer phone calls and assist with release requests.
  • Fulfill patient walk-in record requests.
  • Access and retrieve patient information from computer systems and media.

Qualifications:

  • Must have Release of Information experience.
  • High school diploma required; Associate degree in Health Science preferred.
  • Previous experience in hospital/clinic setting or with electronic health records, related office, or customer service experience.
  • RHIT, RHIA, or CRIS certification preferred.
