Medical Records Technicians (Coders) classify medical data from patient health records in hospital and physician settings. They analyze and abstract health records, assigning codes for diagnoses and procedures using ICD, CPT, and HCPCS systems. Responsibilities include ensuring accurate, ethical coding following guidelines and regulations, comprehensive review of health records (paper or electronic), assisting with documentation requirements, correcting data errors, and orienting new personnel. Utilizes various computer applications and health record software. Work schedule is Monday-Friday. Position based in Salt Lake City, UT. Telework currently authorized but subject to change; not a fully virtual role.
The role requires knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, coding practices, and health record structures. Certification through AHIMA or AAPC is required. The position ranges from GS-4 to GS-8 grade levels, depending on experience and qualifications.

Education & Experience:
- One year experience demonstrating knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, pathophysiology, medical coding, and health records, OR
- Associate degree in health information technology/management or related field with relevant coursework, OR
- Completion of an AHIMA-approved or equivalent intense coding program.
Certification:
- Apprentice/Associate or Mastery level certification through AHIMA or AAPC, or Clinical Documentation Improvement Certification.
Knowledge and Skills:
- Proficiency with health information technology and software used in medical records coding,
- Ability to abstract data from health records,
- Knowledge of ICD, CPT, HCPCS coding guidelines,
- Ability to apply medical terminology and anatomy/physiology knowledge for accurate coding,
- Understanding of regulatory requirements and health information confidentiality laws.
