This position is located in the Health Information Management (HIM) section at the Beckley VA Medical Center. Medical Records Technicians (Coder) classify medical data from patient health records in hospital and physician-office settings. Responsibilities include analyzing and abstracting patients' health records, assigning alphanumeric codes for diagnoses and procedures using ICD, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems, and ensuring accurate, ethical coding adhering to current regulatory and policy guidelines. The role involves reviewing electronic health records comprehensively, assisting facility staff with documentation requirements, consulting with professional staff for clarification, correcting data errors in national VA databases, and orienting new personnel or students.
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8am - 4:30pm.

Basic qualifications include either: one year of experience demonstrating knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, and medical coding; or an associate's degree in health information management or related field with courses in medical terminology and coding; or completion of an AHIMA-approved coding program with eligibility for certification; or equivalent education and experience combinations described in the announcement.
Certification required: Apprentice/Associate or Mastery level certification through AHIMA or AAPC, or Clinical Documentation Improvement Certification.
Additional knowledge, skills, and abilities include ability to analyze health records for accurate outpatient coding, interpret coding guidelines, and use judgment in coding assignments with partial or incomplete guidelines.
