We are seeking a motivated and dependable Medical Records Technician (Coder - Inpatient) to join the Health Information Management section at the John D Dingell VA Medical Center. The role involves classifying medical data from inpatient health records using current ICD CM, PCS, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems. Duties include reviewing and abstracting data to assign codes accurately, consulting clinical staff for documentation clarity, using encoder software for DRG assignment, and ensuring coding supports medical necessity.
Work schedule is Monday through Friday, 8:00 am - 4:30 pm EST, with telework authorized. Candidates must live within a 50-mile radius of a VA Medical Center and maintain availability during Eastern Time business hours.

Must be a U.S. Citizen and proficient in written and spoken English. Required to complete background/security investigation and online onboarding.
Experience: One year of experience indicating knowledge in medical terminology, anatomy, physiology, medical coding, and health records; or an associate's degree in relevant field; or completion of an AHIMA approved coding program.
Certification: Apprentice/Associate or Mastery Level Certification through AHIMA or AAPC, or Clinical Documentation Improvement Certification through AHIMA or ACDIS.
Ability to perform inpatient coding accurately, interpret health records, use judgment with incomplete guidelines, and query clinical staff for documentation support.
Preferred: At least four years of direct coding experience.
Must serve a 1 or 2-year trial period.
