This senior role is located in the Health Information Management (HIM) Section of the Clinical Operations service at the Tennessee Valley Healthcare System. The Medical Records Administrator (Chief CHIM) performs and supervises work managing the health record program and health information services. Responsibilities include managing, preserving, analyzing, and supervising diagnostic and therapeutic health records and overall HIM program activities.
Key duties:
- Provide technical advice and planning on health information management issues affecting the program.
- Establish policies, procedures, and compliance with HIM industry standards and regulations.
- Oversee audits, performance monitoring, and reporting for HIM compliance.
- Participate in strategic planning and resource management for the HIM department.
- Manage HIM workflow, staff supervision, and program improvement initiatives.
- Ensure health records are complete, accurate, timely, and meet regulatory requirements.
- Serve as a clinical advisor on health information documentation, release of information, transcription, and legal matters.
Work schedule is standard weekday hours with ad-hoc telework eligibility. This position requires supervision over various HIM functions including coding, record completion, scanning, and release of information.
Requirements:
- U.S. Citizenship and eligibility requirements.
- Health Information Management certification (e.g., RHIA or RHIT) from AHIMA.
- At least three years of experience in medical records management demonstrating expertise in medical terminology, coding, and healthcare delivery systems.
- Knowledge of legal, regulatory, and accreditation requirements.
- Ability to manage staff and HIM program operations.
Physical duties are primarily sedentary with some light physical activity related to filing and material handling.
The position is a full-time permanent federal appointment with a salary range of $106,437 to $138,370 per year. The role is located in Murfreesboro, Tennessee with occasional travel between Murfreesboro and Nashville VAMCs (up to 50%).

- Minimum 3 years of creditable experience in medical records management including preparation, maintenance, and management of health records and systems

- Ability to pass background and physical examination
