Supervisory Medical Records Technician (ROI)

The Supervisory Medical Records Technician (Release of Information) serves in the Health Information Management Section of the Health Administration Service. This role supervises and directs the ROI staff responsible for disclosing health information in compliance with laws and regulations.

Key responsibilities include supervising the ROI section, providing staffing guidance, auditing and monitoring workflow, assigning and reviewing work, conducting employee evaluations, managing selections and training, ensuring compliance with federal privacy laws (HIPAA, FOIA, Privacy Act), collaborating with VA Regional Counsel on litigation records, and maintaining quality review standards.

Work schedule is Monday to Friday, 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM. Telework is allowed only on an ad hoc basis at management discretion. This is not a virtual position.

Requirements & Qualifications

Applicants must be U.S. Citizens and proficient in spoken and written English. Must pass security and background checks, physical examination, and comply with vaccination requirements.

Basic Qualifications:

  • One year experience with medical terminology and health records, including 6 months performing MRT (ROI) work; OR
  • Associate's degree in health information technology/management or related with coursework in medical terminology, anatomy, legal aspects, and health records; OR
  • Equivalent combination of education and experience as detailed in the announcement.

Experience with supervising, operational monitoring, staff development, and policy implementation in release of information is required for the GS-8 level.

Candidates must demonstrate ability to develop policies, handle interpersonal relations, deliver staff training, and perform full supervisory duties.
